Chanting the Divine Names in Sanskrit is an ancient form of meditation. Many hundreds of years ago, yogis recognized the profound effects of sound vibrations on our states of consciousness and discovered that chanting specific words and names of God gives rise to an experience of the divine. Kirtan and chant practice help us learn to dive deeper than our thoughts and emotions, rest in our hearts, and move toward a direct experience of the Self: our shared essential nature that lies beneath and beyond thoughts, self-concepts, and attachments. There are many forms of yoga, all of which lead to an experience of the divine. Kirtan is a practice of Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion), in which the heart is cultivated as a pathway to consciousness.
We’ll start our Art of Sound Module on Friday evening with a deliciously long, deep dive into the practice of Kirtan with Shyama leading, accompanied by harmonium and drums. For those that are new to chant practice, there will be some basic explanation and instruction, but mostly we will immerse ourselves in a three-hour practice, and explore this ancient devotional discipline together.
Saturday’s classes with Leigh will delve into the Art of Sound in asana. We’ll awaken pranic pathways through sonic vibrations in specific organs and meridians through our yoga practice. Sunday’s morning and afternoon sessions with Shyama will focus on bringing kirtan and chant practice into an asana class setting, and how these practices complement and support each other, and will include an introduction to harmonium playing to accompany kirtan. We will learn how to play and lead a choice selection of favorite yoga classroom chants, and there will be time for plenty of in-depth Q and A.
Counts as 18 hrs towards Yoga Sukhavati 300 HR Certification and 18 CEU credits.
